Trike wheel size and fat tires, explained honestly

Wheel size runs on bicycle intuition — and trikes break that intuition. Small wheels that would feel twitchy on a bike make a trike more stable. Here's what the numbers actually change, and where fat tires earn (and don't earn) their hype.

Why small wheels help a trike (the part bike logic gets backwards)

On two wheels, bigger wheels add gyroscopic stability. A trike doesn't balance — it stands on three contact points, so its stability comes from geometry: the lower the center of gravity and the wider the footprint, the harder it is to tip. Small 20" wheels put the cargo basket, the battery, and you closer to the ground. That's a cornering-stability win, which is why the entire folding-trike class standardized on 20" — it isn't cost-cutting.

The genuine downside is bump behavior: a 20" wheel falls deeper into the same pothole than a 26" wheel. Manufacturers compensate with tire volume — which is the real reason trike tires got wide.

The honest fat-tire math: pushing 4" rubber takes meaningfully more energy. Compare the spec sheets below — the fat-tire models carry the same-or-bigger batteries yet claimshorter ranges than their 3" siblings. If your streets are smooth, fat tires are paying a range tax for comfort you don't need. If your routes include gravel or grass, they're the single best comfort upgrade money buys.

Notice the pattern: every folding model is 20"; the only bigger front wheel in the set (the Grandtan's 24") belongs to the one trike that doesn't fold. That's the real tradeoff being made — wheel size is mostly a storage decision wearing a comfort costume.

Pressure: the free upgrade nobody uses

Wide tires have a wide usable pressure band, and where you sit in it changes the ride more than most component swaps. Near the bottom of the printed range: softer, grippier, slower. Near the top: firmer, more efficient, harsher. Heavier riders should run the upper half of the band (protects rims from curb strikes); comfort-first riders on smooth roads can drop pressure before spending a cent on anything else. The printed range is on the tire sidewall — stay inside it.

So which should you buy?
