Entry matchup: Mooncool TK1 vs Lectric XP Trike2

This is the fight most buyers are actually in: about $1,200 vs about $1,500 for a folding 500W trike with hydraulic brakes and a rear differential. On paper they're closer than the $300 gap suggests — the differences that matter are fit, capacity accounting, and certification.

Our read: the TK1 gives you a bigger battery (696 vs 624 Wh), wider 3.0" tires, turn signals and a horn, and a $300 lower price. The XP Trike2 answers with the full-system UL 2849 certification, a beginner speed preset, Slime-filled tires, tool-free assembly, and Lectric's service network. If both fit your body, the TK1 is the better pure value; the Trike2 is the safer default for a first-ever electric trike.

Upgrade matchup: Mooncool TK Pro vs Lectric XP Trike2 750

At the top of both lineups: 750W motors, torque sensors, and long-range batteries. The TK Pro is $99 cheaper and carries a bigger battery — but the Trike2 750 is faster and better certified.

Our read: the TK Pro is the value play — 120 Wh more battery, a 6-speed drivetrain, and a lower 12.2" standover for $1,700. The Trike2 750 counters with 17 mph (vs 15), the switchable torque/cadence sensor, and UL 2849. Riders who pedal (not just throttle) will appreciate the Mooncool's real gears; riders who mostly throttle will prefer the Lectric's extra speed. Mooncool's own top model, the TK2 PRO ($2,000), adds a color TFT display, a tighter fold, and a fast-charge option to the same motor/battery — worth it mainly if the fold size matters to you.

The six differences that actually matter

1. Capacity fine print — read this if you're over 300 lb

Lectric publishes the honest breakdown: 415 lb total payload, but rider max 330 lb (plus 30 lb front basket, 75 lb rear). Mooncool lists a total max load (400 lb on TK1/FT1, 450 lb on TK2/TK Pro/TK2 PRO) without a published rider sub-limit. Bigger number, less clarity. If you weigh 330–380 lb, the Mooncool 450 lb models are the likelier fit on paper — but we'd email Mooncool support for a rider-weight answer in writing before ordering. Over ~380 lb, neither brand is a clean fit; that's a different shortlist (see the Fit Finder).

2. Rider height cuts opposite ways

Lectric fits 4'10"–6'2"; Mooncool fits 5'0"–6'3". Under 5'0" → Lectric. Over 6'2" → Mooncool. Between: both fit, move on to other criteria.

3. UL certification

The XP Trike2 is certified to UL 2849 as a complete electrical system, and its battery to UL 2271 — the certifications fire departments and insurers increasingly ask about. Mooncool's spec sheets don't publish equivalent certification. That doesn't mean the hardware is unsafe; it means Lectric can prove it on paper and Mooncool currently can't. If you charge indoors (most trike owners do), this is a genuine point for Lectric.

4. Gears vs single-speed

Every Lectric trike is single-speed: the assist modes do the work, and pedaling unassisted (dead battery, or exercise) is one fixed ratio. Mooncool's TK Pro and TK2 PRO carry a Shimano 6-speed, and the FT1 a 7-speed — meaningfully better if you actually pedal, live somewhere hilly, or want the trike to stay usable when the battery is empty.

5. Battery per dollar — with a range-claim reality check

Watt-hours are the honest number; "range" is marketing. TK Pro: 960 Wh at$1,700. Trike2 750: 840 Wh at $1,799. Every claimed range figure (both brands) assumes the lowest assist level, a light rider, and flat ground — plan on roughly half the headline number if you ride throttle-heavy, and you'll be pleasantly surprised instead of stranded.

6. Speed caps are a feature, not a spec race

14 mph (Trike2), 15–15.5 mph (Mooncool), 17 mph (Trike2 750). Three-wheelers don't lean into corners the way bikes do — taking a corner fast on a trike is how tip-overs happen. If a 20+ mph machine is the goal, the honest advice is that you're shopping the wrong category, not the wrong brand.

When neither is the right call

• Taller than 6'3" — both lineups run out of leg room. Look at 24"/26"-wheel trikes like the Addmotor Grandtan M-340.
• Rider weight over ~380 lb — capacity claims get murky across this whole price class; the Grandtan publishes an explicit 350 lb rider + 100 lb cargo rating, and heavier riders should shop by published rider limits only.
• You never need to fold it — non-folding trikes with bigger front wheels ride more smoothly over bumps at similar money.
• You want 20+ mph — that's e-bike territory, not trike territory. Genuinely.

Common questions

Can I still buy the original Lectric XP Trike?

Not new from Lectric — its product page now 404s and the XP Trike2 replaced it in the lineup. Used originals float around; if you buy one, you're trading away the Trike2's refreshed frame and certification for a discount.

Do I need a license to ride either of these?

In most US states these fall under Class 1/2 e-bike rules — no license, no registration. But state law genuinely varies (a few states have age minimums or helmet requirements), so check your state's current rules before riding on public roads.

How much assembly is involved?

Lectric ships the Trike2 essentially rideable out of the box ("tool-free" is their published claim). Mooncool ships near-fully assembled — expect to attach the basket, pedals, and handlebar and check every bolt. Either way: do the pre-ride brake check.
